Visit Oakland County
Strategic Plan
An Integral Part of the Detroit Metropolitan Experience
Oakland County contributed 28% of total visitor spending to Metro Detroit’s tourism economy in 2023, which amounts to 11% state-wide. Much of this can be attributed to the wide array of outdoor activities, historic sites, local culinary and cultural gems, special events, and many charming Main Streets that can be found around every corner.
There are many places for everyone to explore throughout the year!
Why prepare a Tourism & Attraction Strategic Plan?
The Oakland County Department of Economic Development recognizes the important role that tourism and related business attraction and retention has on the local economy and promoting vibrant communities. The County is working to develop a comprehensive Tourism & Attraction Strategic Plan that will:
- Quantify the value and impact of tourism in the County
- Determine sustainable models for tourism development and management
- Identify options for the County’s tourism brand messaging, positioning, and visual identity
- Chart actionable strategies to attract new visitors, residents, businesses, and employees; and extend visitor stays by enhancing experiences, products, mobility and marketing.

Who is participating in the plan development?
The Oakland County Department of Economic Development will oversee the development of the Strategic Plan and manage external partnerships, including with prime consultant, Think Place Agency, and sub-consultants BLKDOG.
The County will be supported by a project Steering Committee representing business, government and non-profit sectors. In addition to the Steering Committee, other participants will be engaged through individual interviews, focus groups, public meetings, and surveys.
